What function do platelets serve in the bloodstream?

A They form blood clots to stop bleeding.

One of the primary purposes of the platelets is to aggregate and form a blood clot when bleeding occurs, such as from a wound or injury. This clot blocks the opening in the damaged blood vessel and prevents further loss of blood from the body. Oxygen is carried by the red blood cells, or erythrocytes. Pathogens and other foreign materials are eliminated by the white blood cells, or leukocytes. Nutrients derived from food are carried directly in the plasma.
